All members of the Meiji Group are carrying out activities to reduce resource and energy consumption and are actively installing energy-efficient equipment, upgrading manufacturing facilities, and converting to energy sources that produce less CO2 emissions.
The actual results of efforts to reduce environmental impact appearing below are indicated by numerical values (energy consumption volumes and CO2 emissions discharged by the factories) for the entire Meiji Group, including its main subsidiaries.
Reducing Industrial Waste
The entire Meiji Group is working to eliminate industrial waste emissions and achieve zero emissions status by practicing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). In fiscal 2010, we were unable to dispose of products that we could not deliver via our regular recycling routes due to the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, our industrial waste volumes were lower than those of the previous fiscal year, thanks largely to our plant-related measures.
Conserving Energy and Reducing CO2 Emissions
The Meiji Group endeavors to conserve energy at all stages from production to distribution. In the production stage, we strive to conserve energy and reduce CO2 emissions by switching from fuel oil to city gas to meet our fuel needs. We make efficient use of the heat generated by our in-house electric power generators by employing a cogeneration system.
Our CO2 emissions fell in fiscal 2010 despite a slight increase in energy consumption volume. To appropriately respond to societal demands, we will strive to streamline our production and distribution systems and reduce the environmental impact of our operations. Specific measures include continued efforts to install energy-efficient equipment and streamline the operations of our facilities.
