Meiji established yogurt as a staple of the Japanese diet, beginning with the first domestically-produced plain yogurt, Meiji Plain Yogurt, in 1971. In 1973, we introduced Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt bringing more of yogurt's characteristically delicious health benefits to Japanese tables. The year 2000 saw the widely-loved Meiji Probio Yogurt launch, promoting new health value in yogurt. Meiji yogurt now has the largest share of the market at 35.8%.*
The Meiji Probio Yogurt line realizes the application of our research by raising the health value of lactic acid bacteria in yogurt with products such as Meiji Probio Yogurt LG21, Meiji Probio Yogurt R-1, and Meiji Probio Yogurt PA-3.
Meiji yogurt isn't only available in Japan. We launched Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt in Thailand and China in 2013 and Singapore in 2014. In 2021, we released Meiji Probio Yogurt in China.
Over 70 years of research in lactic acid bacteria with a library of more than 6,000 different forms has helped us pursue new possibilities in texture and taste. We're extending those possibilities even more by focusing on scientific activities that approach lactic acid bacteria's effect on the body through joint research with the Pasteur Institute in France.
